It is sad to see that some people have lots of potential and yet nothing grows in their field. Potenital is all wasted due to laziness.

Lots of intelligence + laziness = wasted

Less intelligence + lots of effort = something happens

IV 4

Nirmana | citta = mind nyasmitaamaatraat

Nirmana is the main thrust of this Sutra

Nirmana - reconstruction

Construct the mind in a way that is helpful to us

Asmita - a connection
This is critical according to Patanjali

In Indian culture there are traditionally the following categories:

Teachers Soldiers Business people Workers
Brahmanaa Skatriyas Vaishavas Sudras

6 qualities of the teachers

They studied very hard
They had a capacity to teach
Know all practices/rituals/meditations/teach rituals
Can give something valuable and non-material to worthy persons
Recieve something

To know what you want to do - there are 4 steps/references

Clear conscience - stick to that
Changing consciousness - moods - dharma not clear
Conscience tells you what is right/wrong

4.4 uses Citta! - close to consciousness. Rather than Manas - more intellectual - close to senses

Vaasanaam = vaasanaa - smell
Rama - Valmiki
vipaakaa = habit - Sanskrit: to cook
Our impressions take over
Wise people sometimes turn evil

Ramanuja believed that all examples about God must be appropriate

Kapyaasam - description of Supreme by Upanishads

Kapi - monkey
yasam - back of the monkey (red in color)
The Heart of the Lord looks like the back of the Monkey

Hearing his teacher describe the monkey thus - greatly upset Ramanuja

Ka - water
Pyasaam - one who drinks the water, the sun drinks the water
Lotus Flower has red portion
The Lotus Flower drinks the water
So Ramanuja compared God to the Lotus flower - a thing of great beauty

Our response is based on our conditioning
All beings attached to some benefit
Extraordinary beings are an exception to this


Even though good intention might be in someone - when a threat comes - the vasanas take over in spite of us. This is the natural human tendency.

KARMA - ACTION (pramana / viparaya)

There are good and bad vasanas.

Certain things are forgotten. Certain thing leave a very strong impression. Such things are not easy to change without very great effort.

Naayakacitta - 4 categories

Nayaaka - one who commands/leads by example

- Krishnayogi
- Suklayogi
- Suklakrishna
- AsuklaKrishna

1. Dark Yogis - terrorise people - Krsna - (black)
2. Sukla - Bright
Do something good but expect something in return
They do you good but they expect something in return
3. Sukla - Krsna
Sometimes dark/sometimes bright
Dr Jackyl/Mr Hide
4. asukla - akrishna
Neither bright nor dark
No expectations
Best yogis
All other yogis beat their drum
Our duty is all - no demands

What does yoga mean to me?

It means connection primarily - with either a wise teacher or a body of wise and living knowledge. It also means looking into the mirror of experience to understand what the mind does. It means a codified set of principles which help to clarify and explain what the mind does and hence what the mind is. It means a way of living which is very dedicated to discipline and being in a clear state of mind. So being free of all that is unessential. It means living with a clear conscience. It means
relaxation and figuring out through the spaciousness given through relaxation what enormous potentials lie within us. It means identifiying the predominant symbols of the background weave of our consciousness and how those relate to the universal urges of the biological being, as well as how they relate to the universal needs
of the psyche of man (and the cultural ramifications and crossover's therein). It means learning what are right priorities. It means learning what are right attitudes. It means looking upon mistakes and misunderstandings with the shadow of guilt. Yoga to me is the scientific and intuitive vehicle for deciphering the riddle of the causes of suffering. It is the mechanics of the spiritual life applied to every plane of our existence.

Oshaddi – medicine/ritual that removes pain
Mantra – Chanting
Saraswati – Mantras to help with learning
Laksmi – wealth – 1008 mantras
Vishnu - love - 1008 mantras

Faith can do many things

Maakandhehaa - hugged Siva
Kali - one name for Goddess Durga - indestructible strength
A fort where Kali is invoked and worshipped through mantra recitation is said to be impenetrable.

Ananta – something that cannot be measured
A snake – flexible and as hard as needs be

Just living on breath – “vatasana”
Ananta is a good example to mankind

Anjali – gesture
Asking for something – expecting something

He taught how to speak: Mahapushpam
He taught how to be healthy: Ayurveda
He taught how to have a stable, quiet mind: Yoga
